The Surgeon Who Stayed: How Dr. Sandeep Dave Helped Transform Healthcare in Central India

In an insightful conversation on The Hope Code, veteran GI and robotic surgeon Dr. Sandeep Dave reflects on purpose, innovation, ethics, and why compassion will always remain the most powerful tool in medicine.

In an era where medical technology is advancing at an unprecedented pace, conversations about healthcare often revolve around artificial intelligence, robotics and cutting-edge innovation. But for veteran surgeon Dr. Sandeep Dave, one principle has remained unchanged throughout his 36-year career: technology can enhance healthcare, but it can never replace the human touch.

That philosophy forms the heart of his conversation with Varun Khanna, Managing Director of Aster DM Quality Care Limited, on The Hope Code—a healthcare thought leadership platform launched to encourage meaningful conversations around medicine, patient trust and informed decision-making. The initiative aims to simplify complex healthcare topics through conversations with some of the country’s most respected medical experts.

A Promise Made to His City

More than three decades ago, when many young doctors were leaving smaller cities in search of bigger opportunities, Dr. Dave chose a different path.

He decided to stay in Raipur.

At the time, Chhattisgarh had not yet become a separate state, and advanced healthcare infrastructure was limited. Yet he believed meaningful change could be created where it was needed most.

“I never imagined leaving Raipur,” he says during the interview.

The decision wasn’t driven by convenience but by conviction.

Growing up, he had witnessed his father’s struggles and admired his values. Those lessons shaped not only his career but also his sense of responsibility towards the people of his city.

One piece of advice from his father became the defining principle of his professional life.

“Your first wife is your profession.”

For Dr. Dave, medicine was never just a career—it was a lifelong commitment.

The Patient Who Changed Everything

One of the most compelling moments in the interview is Dr. Dave’s recollection of an early surgical case that transformed his vision of healthcare.

After operating on a patient with a perforation, the patient failed to regain consciousness. At that time, the hospital lacked advanced ICU facilities and mechanical ventilators.

Throughout the night, Dr. Dave and his OT technician manually ventilated the patient using a Bain circuit.

Hours later, the patient finally opened his eyes.

For many surgeons, the story would have ended there.

For Dr. Dave, it became the beginning of a much larger dream.

He realised that no surgeon, regardless of skill, could consistently deliver the best outcomes without strong infrastructure, critical care support and multidisciplinary expertise.

That single experience inspired him to build a modern multi-specialty hospital equipped with advanced ICUs and comprehensive support services so that future patients would never have to depend on limited resources for survival.

Building Healthcare for Everyone

When asked why he chose to establish a multi-specialty hospital instead of a single-specialty surgical centre, Dr. Dave’s answer reflects a broader philosophy.

He wanted to build a hospital where every patient—irrespective of financial background—could receive quality healthcare with dignity.

His vision was not merely to create another hospital, but to build an institution that people across all sections of society could trust.

Today, that vision continues to evolve, with new technologies and clinical services being added year after year.

Introducing Advanced Surgery to Central India

Dr. Dave was among the earliest surgeons in Central India to adopt laparoscopic surgery when it was still in its infancy in India.

Later, he became one of the pioneers in introducing robotic surgery to the region.

For him, innovation has always been about improving patient outcomes rather than pursuing technology for its own sake.

He explains that every technological advancement should ultimately help patients recover faster, experience less pain and enjoy a better quality of life.

Why Robots Will Never Replace Surgeons

One of the most engaging segments of the interview explores robotic surgery and artificial intelligence.

Many patients still worry that robots perform surgeries independently.

Dr. Dave dismisses this misconception with remarkable clarity.

“The surgeon is always the master. The robot is only a tool.”

According to him, robotic technology extends the surgeon’s capabilities rather than replacing them.

Its robotic arms provide access to areas that are difficult to reach manually, while high-definition three-dimensional vision and powerful magnification enable greater surgical precision.

However, technology cannot replicate clinical judgement.

Every patient’s anatomy is unique, and unexpected situations arise during surgery that require experience, intuition and decision-making—qualities that remain uniquely human.

For that reason, he believes AI may continue to assist surgeons, but it cannot replace them.

The Human Touch Cannot Be Automated

Perhaps the most memorable insight from the interview comes when Dr. Dave speaks about compassion.

While machines can improve precision, they cannot comfort a frightened patient.

They cannot reassure anxious families.

They cannot look into a patient’s eyes and inspire confidence before surgery.

According to Dr. Dave, these moments define healthcare just as much as medical expertise.

Technology may continue to evolve, but empathy will always remain irreplaceable.

Defining Success Beyond Surgery

For many surgeons, a technically successful operation represents a good outcome.

Dr. Dave sees it differently.

“A perfect outcome is one that improves the patient’s quality of life.”

He explains that success isn’t measured solely by what happens inside the operating theatre.

True success is when patients return to their families, resume their work, regain independence and live better lives after treatment.

This patient-centred philosophy has guided his practice throughout his career.

A Bigger Vision for India’s Healthcare

Looking ahead, Dr. Dave believes advanced healthcare should not remain limited to metropolitan cities.

While Tier-2 cities have witnessed significant progress, he says quality healthcare must continue expanding into smaller towns and rural India.

His aspiration is to ensure that patients receive world-class treatment closer to home, while also positioning Central India as a destination for international patients seeking advanced medical care.

A Message for Young Professionals

As the conversation draws to a close, Varun Khanna asks Dr. Dave what advice he would offer young professionals from smaller cities.

His response is simple yet powerful.

“You don’t have to leave your city to become successful. Build something so meaningful that your city becomes known because of your work.”

It is a message that extends well beyond healthcare.

It speaks to leadership, purpose and the transformative power of choosing to build where others may choose to leave.
